The Environment Award

On the 22nd February, 1993 the Malta Environment Scout Award (MESA) was instituted by the Scout Association of Malta, in conjunction with the Secretariat for the Environment with the help of the then Parliamentary Secretary for the Environment, Dr Stanley Zammit MD.

I am very happy to be associated with this most worthy initiative, both as the Parliamentary Secretary of the Environment and also as an ex-scout.

I have often contended that the Scout Movement has been the precursor of the many environmental groups which are active today. The Scout Movement has always promoted a keen appreciation for the natural environment and fostered a dedicated concern for our obligations towards nature as a direct reflection of our sense of maturity and community spirit.

To be a good scout is to respect the environment.

In the foreword to the Malta Environment Scout Award regulations  booklet (February 1993), the then Chief Commissioner Mr Joseph G. Grech wrote :

"One of the great challenges facing us today is the preservation of our environment, both locally and globally.

The Scout Movement has been one of the pioneer movements in favour of the environment and the Malta Environment Scout Award provides all of us with a great chance of helping in the reservation of our environment for the benefit of the whole community.

As members of the Scout Movement, I encourage you to try your best to gain the Award and to be proud wearers of the badge so as to show, to one and all, that you do care about the environment and that you are doing something about it.

By doing this, you will be doing your duty towards your country which after all, is what you have promised to do when you made your Scout Promise.

I wish you many happy hours while working to gain the respective Awards."

To gain the Award, the Cub Scout, Scout or Venture Scout, has to complete one requirement from each of the following six Sections:

A.  CONSERVATION
B.  ENVIRONMENT
C.  EXPEDITION
D.  NATURE
E.  POLLUTION
F.  SPECIAL PROJECT

Rover Scouts may also gain the Award by completing additional requirements complementary to the six Sections listed above.
